About Good Friday :
Good Friday is the day on which Jesus Christ was crucified for the sins of mankind. Having been betrayed by Judas on the night of the last supper, Jesus Christ was arrested by Jewish the next day morning. Jesus was sent to Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of the province who sentenced Jesus to crucifixion. As a punishment, Jesus was compelled to carry his Cross to the place of his execution. After arrival at Calvary, Jesus was nailed to the cross and crucified between two thieves on Friday morning. At the moment of Christ's death, an earthquake occurred and the long, thick curtain at the Temple was said to have torn from top to bottom. Then the body of Christ was removed from the cross and laid in a donated tomb, buried according to custom.
The service on Good Friday is solemn with special prayers. No organ is played and all vestments are red or black. Starting from midnight, priests begin to recite specific prayers asking for God’s mercy and forgiveness on all mankind. The solemn, muted atmosphere is preserved until the Easter Sunday.
During Good Friday services, Christians go up to the front of the church and bow before or even kiss a cross. This act is called Veneration of the Cross and in which Christians honor the great sacrifice Jesus made on the cross.
Catholics are required to refrain from eating food made out of any kind of meat on Good Friday. On this holy day, they are required to observe fast, which means that they can eat only one complete meal and two smaller ones during the day.
